A family weekend at the Quinta

International Day of Families, marked on 15 May, invites us to reflect on something simple, yet often difficult to make happen: quality time together.

More than a specific date, it is a reminder. And perhaps that is exactly what inspires this idea, to slow down, even if only for a weekend, and rediscover the pleasure of being together as a family, without rushing and without elaborate plans. But there is always one practical question: how do you switch off without the children getting bored?

Space to run, explore and simply be

In a natural setting, time takes on a different dimension. There is no need for packed schedules, all you really need is space. Quiet paths, trees and corners waiting to be discovered create, by themselves, a setting where children easily find ways to occupy themselves, while adults enjoy a calmer rhythm, far from everyday routines.

Between swims and shared games

The pool almost inevitably becomes a central part of the stay. For some, it means energy; for others, rest, all in the same place. And when it is time to slow things down, the games room naturally extends those moments. Simple games, easy laughter and time shared without too many distractions.

Unexpected, and much appreciated, company

There are also those who become part of the experience in a spontaneous way. Gaby the cat, always curious and always around, often ends up joining in the play or simply watching everything from nearby. Around the grounds of the Quinta, it is not unusual to come across the duck or the chickens – encounters that, for many children, quickly turn into moments of genuine excitement. No effort, no planning: just direct contact with what is already there.

Small discoveries that stay in the memory

There is a kind of attention that only appears when time slows down. Between a walk and a quiet pause, questions, details and small gestures begin to surface – the sort that rarely find space in everyday life. Noticing what grows around you, following the rhythm of the vegetable garden, recognising different smells, textures and sounds – all of this creates a closer relationship with the place itself.

For children, these experiences often carry the charm of novelty. For adults, they bring the opportunity to witness that excitement up close and to share a more present kind of time, shaped by observation and curiosity. They are not spectacular moments, nor are they designed to impress -and perhaps that is precisely why they stay.

And if the sea calls, it is never far away

The proximity of the coast makes it easy to add another landscape to the weekend without changing its rhythm. In just a few minutes, the scenery shifts: from the green calm of the Quinta to the open light of the beach and the Atlantic horizon.

That possibility adds variety to the days without demanding much preparation. A trip to the sea can be just that, a simple outing, a stop to look, a walk by the water or a little extra playtime for the children before returning. The countryside remains at the centre of the stay, but the sea, so close by, expands that feeling of freedom.

Switching off, without forcing it

In the end, it comes down to this: creating the right conditions for family time to happen naturally.

Without too many plans, without the need to fill every minute. When the setting does part of the work, everything else follows more easily, the children stay happily occupied, the adults breathe more deeply, and shared time takes on a different meaning.

Inspired by International Day of Families, here is the suggestion: find more moments like this ate Quinta da Carlota throughout the year. Because, very often, it is in simplicity that everything happens.
