Torres Vedras in May: what to do
May is perhaps the most beautiful month to discover Torres Vedras. The days grow longer, the light becomes softer, and the region reveals itself at its very best, green fields, growing vineyards, inviting rural paths and the calm of the sea just a few kilometres away. For those looking for a short escape that combines nature, gastronomy, culture and time to slow down, this is the ideal moment to experience the best of Oeste.
Start with the walking trails
The most beautiful way to discover the municipality is probably on foot or by bicycle. The Eco Caminho do Sizandro links Torres Vedras to Santa Cruz along a route of around 21 km, mostly on wide, accessible paths with very little incline. It follows the Sizandro River valley all the way to the coast, ending near Praia Formosa. In May, it is an especially beautiful route: the landscape is green, temperatures are mild, and arriving at the sea carries that special feeling that comes from taking your time.
For those who prefer shorter distances, there are partial sections – up to Foz do Sizandro it is 18 km – as well as several other eco-trails in the municipality that pair well with a picnic around midday.
The sea at Santa Cruz
Santa Cruz is an almost essential stop. Just 13 km from Quinta da Carlota, its beaches offer striking cliffs, golden sand and that coastal atmosphere that suits the first warm days of the year so well. In May, before the high season begins, there is still plenty of space for peaceful walks by the sea, long coffees on a terrace and late afternoons with views over the Atlantic.
It is also a good time for anyone wanting to learn how to surf – the sea begins to feel more inviting, and there are several schools in the area with lessons for all levels.
The historic centre of Torres Vedras
In the town centre, discovery happens through old streets, viewpoints and layers of memory. Torres Vedras Castle, with panoramic views over the whole region, is a good place to begin. From there, narrow streets lead down to Chafariz dos Canos, the Aqueduct and São Pedro Church. Not far away, there are also traces of the Lines of Torres Vedras – the Napoleonic fortification system that made this town decisive during the Peninsular War and which today attracts, above all, British visitors with an interest in the period.
It is an ideal walk for anyone who enjoys combining culture, architecture and small pauses in local cafés.
Music and culture: the May programme
Teatro-Cine de Torres Vedras has one of its richest programmes of the year in May, with cinema, theatre, dance and concerts.
A highlight of the month is the concert “Anascer” by Albaluna – a folk rock band from Torres Vedras -on Saturday, 23 May, at 9.30 pm. It marks the band’s thirteen-year career and is a very good reason to stay one more night in the region.
At the same time, the “À La Carte” Concerts take place – short 15-minute musical moments in which the audience chooses “from the menu” the pieces they want to hear, performed on the historic organ of Igreja da Misericórdia. They take place on Tuesdays throughout May, form part of the 10th Torres Vedras Organ Cycle, and admission is free, with a ticket required in advance and subject to capacity.
At the table in Oeste
May is also an excellent month to eat and drink well in Torres Vedras. The region is deeply connected to the land – to bread, wine, traditional flavours and, of course, pastel de feijão, one of the municipality’s most iconic sweet specialities. Between traditional restaurants, historic pastry shops and local producers, there is always a good reason to sit down and taste Oeste without rushing.
For those who appreciate wine, it is worth setting aside time to visit one of the region’s wineries. AdegaMãe is one of the best known, but there are dozens of estates and producers between Torres Vedras and the sea. May is an especially generous time for walks among the vineyards.
RESERVA: wine and gastronomy in celebration
The month ends with one of the most anticipated moments in the regional calendar: RESERVA – Fórum de Inovação, Gastronomia e Vinho. Its 6th edition takes place from 29 to 31 May 2026, in the former facilities of the Instituto da Vinha e do Vinho, in Torres Vedras, shining a light on producers, innovative projects, wine landscapes and the identity of the territory.
It is a free event, open to the general public and to professionals in the sector, with tastings, talks and gastronomic moments. For those staying in the municipality that weekend, it is one of the best ways to discover the region’s wines and the producers helping this territory grow.
Quinta da Carlota as the place to return to
After a day spent between sea, countryside, culture and local flavours, returning to Quinta da Carlota is a way of extending that sense of rest. With 20 hectares of landscape, orchards, its own vegetable garden and peaceful corners, the Quinta is the perfect place to return to – between town and sea, with privacy, comfort and a close connection to nature.
In May, Torres Vedras is not discovered only through an itinerary. It is lived slowly, among walks, music, wine, tradition and landscapes that invite you to stay one more day.
